Sevenoaks Local History Fair 22.3.14
Along with other local history groups including those from Westerham, Weald, Sevenoaks, Kemsing, Hextable, Seal and Eynsford/Farningham, Swanley History Group exhibited at the Sevenoaks Library Local history Fair focusing on artefacts from WW1.
It was a very enjoyable and educational day and our thanks go to all our members who either came along to
help out and brought along their own family memorabila to share, or came as visitors. Our table included research done by committee members Ann Hollands, Peter Taylor , Esme Hodge and Terry Morris into the Swanley War Memorial and the stories behind some of the fallen servicemen named on it. Thanks to several of our Group members for providing us with photos of their relatives and their medals.
Another member brought along family items including a diary, and greeting cards sent from the front and Committee member Keith Whitmore brought along a WW1 trench periscope and his grandfather's medals along with a 'death penny.' Committee member Gary Vaughan brought along a very interesting collection of postcards.
Friends of the group also loaned us other artefacts including a WW1 helmet and a Lee Enfield Rifle.
We all learned a lot about the conflict for those who served in the battlefields and about the effect of the war on those on the home front.
It was helpful to us as a new group and first time participants in such an event to see how other groups organise their displays and to make new contacts with others who share our interest in preserving local and family history for the future.
Considering that this was the first time we have participated in such an event we think that Swanley History Group made an excellent contribution to the day.
