REMEMBRANCE WOOD JULY 2020Swanley History Group are sad to hear that the Remembrance Wood in Swanley Park has been badly damaged by fire in July 2020. This was established by Swanley Wildlife and Nature Group (SWAN) in November 2018 to mark the 100th Anniversary of the end of WW1 and act as a permanent memorial to those local men who fell. Swanley History Group were proud to take part in the planting of the trees alongside The British Legion, members of all ages of local community groups such as Brownies, Cubs, Scouts and Guides. Hopefully something can be salvaged from the ashes and a new Memorial can be established in some form.
Please see SWAN's Facebook site for more details and to offer them your support in their efforts to overcome this terrible situation.

Remembrance Wood Swanley Park
In November 2018 Swanley History Group supported Swanley Wildlife and Nature Group (SWAN) with their project to create a Remembrance Wood in Swanley Park to commemorate the Fallen of WW1 named on Swanley War Memorial.
SWAN topped up the trees in the Remembrance Wood on Saturday 23rd November 2019 - another 400 whips were planted which will supplement those lost over the past year through natural wastage, vandalism etc.
They have also planted 1000 daffodil bulbs around the remaining trees in the Wood which should look really good in the spring.
Lest we forget.
Remembrance Wood Swanley Wildlife and Nature Group and STC, Swanley Park Event 24th November 2018
Members of Swanley History Group were proud to attend the planting of Remembrance Wood in Swanley Park. Despite the cold weather and threat of rain there was a good turnout of both SHG Committee and members, relatives of the Fallen who helped us with our research into the WW1 Fallen(it was good to put faces to names of people we had previously only had email contact with - including Terry Rooke who travelled down specially from Berkshire). It was especially rewarding to see that all generations were involved with children from local cubs, rainbows, brownies and scouts alongside British Legion representatives, SWAN, Swanley Rugby Club, other local community groups and SHG helping in the planting of over 600 whips which over the years will grow to form a mixed wood in Remembrance of those from Swanley and the surrounding area who have died in conflict.
