Philip Brown's schooldays at Hextable Homes for Little Boys 1930's
A huge thank you to Jenny Rundell and family for sharing these unique photos taken by her father, Philip Brown, during his childhood spent at Hextable Homes for Little Boys in the 1920's and 1930's. He was there from the age of 9 after the death of his father. He was a keen photographer - a skill taught to him at the school and went on to join the Merchant Navy - the other choice offered to him being an apprenticeship at a London Hotel. He later became a Trinity House Pilot at Harwich.
Jenny tells us that her father did not talk much about his life at the Home but did recall having dusters tied to his feet to clean floors, that boys painted the swimming pool and were taught practical skills such as sewing.
The captions come from the family photograph album.
